DIY Toothpaste Without Chemicals

You are here: Home / Beauty & Hygiene / DIY Toothpaste Without Chemicals

But the ADA Says It’s OK

Ok, I admit it, I didn’t go to the dentist on a regular basis.  Most times it wasn’t because I didn’t want to.  My teeth weren’t in that bad of shape though.  Yet, it seemed to me that I had cavities and tartar build up anyway.  So, what’s the point of fluoride again?  The ADA’s (American Dental Association) website gave me their answer.  When I found out the truth, I had to make a change.

A few years ago, there was a lot of hub-bub around my county regarding adding fluoride to our water supply.  That reminded me of when I was very young, my Ma would always remind me about how my teeth would be strong because she had the dentist give me fluoride treatments.  I don’t recall what that was exactly, but I know now it’s something I wouldn’t do for my kids.  How could she know then, what we know now?  When I did my research on fluoride and other chemicals in toothpaste, I was shocked!

There’s a Solution for Every Problem

I had grown tired of buying the major brands of toothpaste for a couple of reasons.  One being that no matter which brand I used, I felt as if there was always an aftertaste.  Fresh breath lasting all of about 10 minutes’, tops.  The major brands add sweeteners too.  And let’s face it, decent toothpaste isn’t cheap.  Or so we thought.

Armed with what I found out about the “extras” in store-bought toothpaste, I searched for an answer.   But how would my breath be with an alternative paste?  I had tried a popular natural brand and just could not deal.  How would it work; would it even help at all?  No better way than to make some and find out.  I love a good challenge.

My Results

There are many alternatives that can be found for DIY toothpaste.  Clay, peroxide, water, baking soda and many more.  You should consider what you find to be best fit for your family and their needs.

I did a lot of research about baking soda, clay, coconut oil, and many other methods.  However, most of my time was spent looking into essential oils (EO).  The oils are an important part of the recipe my family uses.

Essential oils being used for toothpaste should be of food grade and used very carefully, with extreme caution.  Please do your own research on how to use EO for ingestion.

After a year of using my own special recipe of toothpaste, I finally had a dentist appointment.  Let me just say that these are my results and I’m sure they are not typical.

  • The dentist told me I had less tartar build up
  • No new cavities
  • My teeth seemed very healthy
  • And my breath has had no complaints
  • My mouth just feels healthier in general, gums included

Here’s my family’s recipe; If you try it please leave me a comment and let me and others know what you think.

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons of aluminum-free baking soda
  • 2 tablespoons of organic coconut oil
  • 10 tablets of cell salts (minerals) crushed into a fine powder

Here’s a link to the cell salts I use

  • 8-10 drops of Clove Bud EO
  • 5-7 drops of Peppermint EO
  • 2-3 drops of Rosemary EO

Procedure

  • Mix EO’s with Coconut oil before adding dry ingredients.
  • Stir oils with powders into a paste.
  • Store in a glass container.  Keep it out of direct light (EO’s are light-sensitive).

I will definitely be trying this. Sounds like a great alternative to the expensive natural stuff I am buying now. Thanks!
