If we want to keep our body healthy, we must keep it hydrated along with good nutrition.
The optimum amount of water intake by an adult is around 1.5 – 2 liters, approximately 6 – 8 glasses of fluids. By fluids we mean, water, nut milk, sugar-free drinks like Tazo tea and your favorite organic coffee.
Soft drinks should be avoided as they are NOT the best choice for fluid intake. A single can of soft drink such as fizzy orange or cola has up to 13 teaspoons of sugar. Along with the carbonated fizz that makes them even more unhealthy.
Bottled water is a common trend these days, especially in America. It has become the second most popular drink after soft drinks. It can be seen in every American’s hand, in the backpack of every traveler and many more. A recent study has given a punch to many water lovers. It states that the advantages of drinking plenty of water are overrated. The concept of drinking eight glasses of water a day at a minimum is nothing but a guideline by the elders, not scientific research.
But please wait; don’t put your bottles down so soon.
Suppose, there is no evidence of drinking eight glasses a day but still, there are many reasons to drink water. Water, in any form, is essential for a healthy life.
Joan Koelemay, RD, dietitian for the Beverage Institute, an industry group. He says, “Think of water as a nutrient your body needs that is present in liquids, plain water, and foods. All of these are essential daily to replace the large amounts of water lost each day.”
Kaiser Permanente nephrologist Steven Guest, MD, agrees. “Fluid losses occur continuously, from skin evaporation, breathing, urine, and stool and these losses must be replaced daily for good health,” he says.

Our bodies are about 60% water. It makes a marked percentage of the total body content. These bodily fluids perform many functions. Functions like digestion, absorption, circulation, the creation of saliva, transportation of nutrients, and maintenance of body temperature.

Skin functions as a protective barrier to prevent fluid loss. Skin, itself has high water content. If you want to look younger and prevent your skin from dryness and wrinkles, nourish it with as much water as you can. Skin cells plump up when hydrated making your skin look younger. Water refreshes skin tissues, moisturizes it and increases its elasticity. Fluids also cleanse away the impurities and increase blood circulation and flow, giving your skin its ultimate pretty glow.

Want a slim figure? Planning diets? Nutritionists and gym teachers have used water for weight loss for years. Especially, substituting water for higher calorie beverages.
Penn State researcher Barbara Rolls, Ph.D., author of The Volumetrics Weight-Control Plan. She says, “What works with weight loss is if you choose water or a non-caloric beverage over a caloric beverage and/or eat a diet higher in water-rich foods that are healthier more filling, and help you trim calorie intake.”

Though your skin contains plenty of water, it doesn’t mean that over-hydration will function to erase wrinkles or fine lines, says Atlanta dermatologist, Kenneth Ellner, MD.
He adds, “Dehydration makes your skin look drier and wrinkled, which can be improved with proper hydration, but once you are adequately hydrated, the kidneys take over and excrete excess fluids.”
Moisturizers help you “lock” the moisture, creating a physical barrier to keep moisture in.

Fluids transport waste products in and out of cells. Guest explains it in another way. He says that the main toxin to our body is the blood urea nitrogen. This is a water-soluble waste that passes through the kidneys and is excreted in urine. “Your kidneys do an amazing job of cleansing and ridding your body of toxins as long as your intake of fluids is adequate,”.
Water Helps Maintain Normal Bowel Function
Considerable amounts of fluids help prevent constipation. When an adequate amount isn’t present, the colon absorbs water from stool to maintain hydration – resulting in constipation.
