Homemade reusable baby wipes are so easy, inexpensive, and (believe it or not) convenient. If you are already using cloth diapers, you might as well use cloth wipes too. You can just add them to the cloth diaper laundry! You will save money using your own homemade wipes. It will definitely be a healthier alternative over the conventional store bought wipes. Also, I can assure you, it will be a better environmental choice, since disposable wipes will most likely sit in the landfill for years to come after your one time use. There are only a few things that you are going to need to make your own reusable baby wipes.
- Two containers to store the wipes in
- Vitamin E oil – 1 tsp
- Lavender Essential Oil – 5-10 drops
- Vegetable oil of choice (almond oil, olive oil, or grapeseed oil work the best) – 2 tbsp
- Cloth to use for wipes – enough for two containers full of wipes
- Pinking Shears (optional)
Container – For the container to keep the wipes in, you can use an old wipes container (recommended) or you can buy a container that is meant for wipes. What you see in the picture above is one of those special containers. If I had not received this as a gift I would simply be using an old wipes container.
Vitamin E Oil – Vitamin E oil acts as a preservative and is necessary to keep the wipes from getting gross and moldy.
Lavender Essential Oil – Lavender essential oil is optional if you want your wipes to have a nice smell.
Vegetable Oil – I prefer to use olive oil or almond oil, grapeseed oil works also. These are gentle on the skin and should not cause any bad reactions on your baby’s bum.
Wipes – As far as the cloth that you use for the wipes you have a few options. You can use cut up old t-shirts or flannel shirts, store bought baby wash clothes, or fleece fabric from the store (cut into squares). If cutting up fabric, using pinking shears will keep the edges from fraying so that you will not need to sew anything.
Now to putting it all together is so simple. Once you get the hang of it, it will literally only take you five to ten minutes from start to finish.
1st Step – Fill your bathroom sink halfway full of water.
2nd Step – Add 2 tbsp of vegetable oil, 1 tsp of vitamin E oil, and 5 – 10 drops of lavender essential oil.
3rd Step – Add your wipes to the sink. Push the wipes down into the water and squeeze the wipes to make sure they are soaking up the water.
4th Step – Take one wipe at a time out of the sink and wring it out. Do not want to wring it out completely. You will want enough liquid left for the wipes to feel wet but you don’t want the wipes dripping with water. Once you have done that place the wipes in the container of choice. And you’re done!
It really is so simple to make. It is not very time consuming and the benefits of using cloth wipes are awesome!
