Lately, I’ve been giving more support to my local farmers markets. Delicious produce is just one of many reasons to buy from farms in your area. Here are five more very good reasons.
1. Get to know the community.
Wouldn’t you rather be outdoors in the fresh air on a nice, sunny day than be strolling through a grocery store with halogen lights and music playing on the speakers? Going to a farmers market makes food shopping enjoyable rather than a daunting task. The farmers market is a community gathering- a place to meet with friends and family and get a real taste of small-town life in the midst of overcrowded cities.
2. Taste Authentic Flavors
Fruits and vegetables from farmers markets are among the tastiest and freshest available. They’re brought directly from farm to market: no shipping, no stimulation of the ripening process, and no sitting in storage.
3. Know Where Your Food Comes From
A weekly trip to a farmers market is a great way to get to know the farmers and connect with them about their produce. Meeting and speaking with them is an opportunity to understand exactly where and how the food is produced. Often times, farmers market Web sites will also have profiles, articles, and maps of the farms’ locations so you can learn more about them before you even get there.
4. Nourish Yourself Organically
Most food in grocery stores is grown using genetic modification and sprayed with pesticides. Some have been irradiated, or even waxed. These practices for crop growth stimulation have many negative effects on our health. However, most food found at a farmers markets is minimally processed and more nutritious. Many farmers go to great lengths to grow the healthiest produce possible by using sustainable techniques and picking the produce right before market.
5. Support Farming Families
Farmers and their families need community support now more than ever due to large agricultural businesses and factory farms dominating the marketplace. Purchasing directly from farmers provides them with a better return for their produce and gives them an equal chance in the globalized economy.
These are just a few reasons to support your local farmers market, but they’re so important. You’ll be more connected to your community, improve your health through better eating, and support the local economy. Why do you shop at your local farmers market?
