Have you ever seen a butterfly from afar? Pretty, isn’t it? Well… have you ever looked at one up close: it’s amazing! The design and detail of its wings can never be fully appreciated from a distance. Unless we take the time to get up close and look, we’ll never see the intricate art that is a butterfly’s wing. We would just miss out. And wouldn’t that be a shame?
Now think about your business. Your start-up is like that beautiful butterfly. As the leader, you want to make sure that when your customers take a close look at your wings, they are flawless and ready for flight. The only way that will ever happen is if you sweat the small stuff and pay attention to the details.
We’ve always been told not to sweat the small stuff, but maybe we should. Paying close attention to the little things is what’s needed to make your business above ordinary. These are opportunities to make your company stand out from the rest, chances to be phenomenal.
Any great brand comes from a good company that has an even better leader, and you can almost bet that they most definitely sweat the small stuff. They’re not afraid to roll up their sleeves and do the dirty work. Hey, somebody’s gotta do it! This is your dream, right? Your baby. So take ownership of it. Take control of every single detail. This may seem overwhelming, but with the right kind of dedication, organizational skills, a great management team, and a whole lot of patience it can be done.
Cutting corners is never the answer. It might help to get a project done sooner, but at the end of the day it will reflect poorly on your business. So taking the extra time to make sure the product or service your business has to offer supersedes your customers’ expectations will only ensure they keep coming back. It will also help create and maintain a positive reputation, which is everything if you want a stable, thriving company.
One of our sayings at G2N is “Details Never Cut Corners.” We always encourage our bloggers and other team members to take a little more time on a blog or project, if that time will lead to excellence. We do have deadlines, but life happens. Things come up, and sometimes changes have to be made in order to make sure a project is the best it can be. It’s more important for the work we produce to be exceptional and a day over deadline, than just good and on time. Finding the balance by learning your team’s strengths will help determine the time needed to get the job done efficiently, but also produce excellent results. Remember, it is much easier to help your employees create great work habits and excellent expectations than trying to get them to break bad habits and mediocre expectations.
Steve Schussler states in his book It’s A Jungle in There, as entrepreneurs we must have a “helicopter view” meaning “the ability to gain enough mental altitude to see the big picture while retaining the ability to descend, hover, and see the details too. WE need to think big, but also focus small”(p.61). As a leader it’s vital for you to find a good balance so that you aren’t only thinking about the bigger picture, or getting so wrapped up in minor details that you lose sight of your goals and vision. Yes, it takes a huge amount of time and energy to pull off something like this, but if everyone could do it then everyone would be an entrepreneur.
