At the age of thirty my husband and I had a lot of spiritual and intellectual growth. We also decided on a vegetarian lifestyle. My husband who is very much a carnivore was struggling with being a vegetarian, so I incorporated TVP (textured vegetable protein) into our diet daily as a meat substitute. At the time, I did not realize eating a large amount of soy based product could affect my health. Soy has an estrogen like effect on your body. It is believed that too much estrogen will block the thyroid hormone inhibiting the conversion of T4 into active T3 thus causing your thyroid levels to be low.
Within a couple of years my symptoms of hypothyroidism began to appear. I tried several natural approaches without any success. After 5 years and a lot of excess weight I succumbed to taking a synthetic synthroid. Within a month I was already seeing some much-needed improvements in my health. I could make it through the day without a nap, my hair wasn’t falling out and my mind was becoming clear again. I had stopped gaining weight, but was unable to lose the weight I had gained. Diet and exercise did not affect any weight loss. I became frustrated with the fact I was eating healthy and exercising regularly and I was still unable to lose weight. The synthetic synthroid had helped, but it always felt like it wasn’t completely fixing all the problems.
Fourteen years later, after much reading and research, I decided to give a natural approach another chance. I began by taking a kelp supplement. Kelp is high in iodine, something people struggling with hypothyroidism are deficient in. I took myself off the synthetic synthroid and started a natural synthroid derived from bovine. I have found that the natural synthroid supplement has been more beneficial to fixing all the hypothyroid symptoms. For the first time in a very long time, my body was able to lose weight with diet and exercise.
What I have learned in the past 20 years is our diet affects every aspect of our body. Giving our bodies the right foods and beverages that meet our nutritional needs is a number one priority. Many illnesses are from a lack of vitamins and minerals. Even our synthetic medication can block or deplete these vitamins and minerals. I am not recommending for anyone to quit taking their medication. What I am suggesting is everyone do their own research and find out how the medication (prescribed and over the counter) you are taking affects the vitamin and mineral balance in your body. Quite possibly there is a natural substitute that could replace your synthetic medication. Often times, there is a natural prescription as well.
I’m well aware this is a sensitive topic for many. Please understand I am not judging anyone for their choices natural or synthetic. We are each on our own path in life and we need to discover what works for our own life. I am only offering those who may not have considered a natural solution another choice.
